Communications & Scientific culture

IDIBELL's Communication and Fundraising Unit aims to improve public understanding of science focusing on the institute, its researchers and its value to society.

The unit carries out its mission through a wide range of initiatives and activities aimed at different audiences, including researchers, journalists and the media, politicians, students, science professors, the general public and, of course, members of IDIBELL.

SCIENTIFIC CULTURE

At the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL), over one thousand researchers share a mission: to lead pioneering advances in science and medicine in order to improve people’s lives through rigorous and human healthcare. For more than twenty years, IDIBELL has been conducting life-changing research. Our efforts are synergistically driven in collaboration with the Bellvitge University Hospital, the Catalan Institute of Oncology, and the University of Barcelona, across four key areas: oncology, neuroscience, regenerative medicine, and translational medicine. We host seventy-four research groups that have contributed to more than 1,500 scientific publications, 200 clinical trials, and 150 competitive projects per year. IDIBELL is also firmly committed to science outreach, education, and fostering a vibrant scientific and cultural ecosystem. How about you? Do you also feel inspired by our challenges? Move forward with us: collaborate, share your talent, or make a donation. Help us change lives.

Outreach

Stand-up Science

With great enthusiasm and excitement, IDIBELL’s young researchers share their ideas and projects to help them gain the recognition they deserve. Stand-up Science is a science outreach audiovisual project designed to bring the work of IDIBELL’s young researchers to a wide audience. Launched in 2018, it has held seven editions, featuring 42 monologues and reaching 65,000 views on YouTube and Instagram. The initiative is promoted by IDIBELL and the City Council of L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, in collaboration with Torre Barrina, with production by Eduscopi and support from FECYT. The project brings to the fore pressing questions and socially relevant concerns: How many people live with chronic diseases? How does a single cell become a person? How can we preserve patients’ quality of life? What are rare diseases? What is lymphangioleiomyomatosis?

VacunAcció

The fourth edition of VacunAcció, organized by IDIBELL and the Institut Bellvitge, was a clear example of how young people can take the lead in the fight against misinformation. High school students from science and arts tracks took part by creating creative campaigns to promote vaccination—ranging from raps and videos to comics and brochures. Guided by researchers and science communicators, they learned to tell reliable information apart from falsehoods, and how to communicate with clarity and empathy. More than just an educational project, it was a transformative experience that brought together science, art, and social commitment in the classroom. Because sharing good information is also a way of caring.

Scientific illustration workshop

We are launching a new science and arts project at the Bellvitge High School, as part of the FemTàndemLH program: a scientific illustration workshop led by illustrator Isabel Loureiro. Illustration techniques have been among the most important tools for creating scientific imagery throughout the history of modern science. Today, methods like engraving or drawing are less commonly used, yet traces of these techniques remain strongly present in contemporary photographic or digital detection methods—in the framing, perspectives, use of color, and more. It is essential for young researchers to understand the historical and artistic foundations that shape today’s scientific disciplines. Scientific and artistic baccalaureates working together!
